This
week in the 30 Day Money Diet we discuss how to make big savings by
reducing your household expenses while keeping everybody in the family
looking good and feeling great. Everyone from Mum and Dad down to your
furry or feathered friend can join in to give your family a big
financial boost - and you'll be amazed by how much you can save!
Mortgage, sweet mortgage
Mortgage costs can eat up a big chunk of your budget, but shopping around for a better deal is easy and you might be able to make some big savings without changing your lifestyle at all! Jump online or speak to a broker to find the best deals out there and get a comparison done and then speak to your current lender to see what they’ll offer you in order to keep your business. But be wary of ‘honeymoon’ interest rates if you’re considering switching; these introductory rates may seem attractive, but it’s important to know what you’ll be paying after that first ‘romance’ with a new bank is over. It’s also worth taking any fees and charges into account, because you’ll need to weigh these up against the savings you’ll make to find out if you’re really going to come out ahead. If you’re renting, you still have options: consider downsizing if you can, and ask your landlord about a discount for paying up-front – you never know if you don’t ask!
Lookin’ good
When it comes to looking good on a shoestring, the thing to remember is that it’s what’s inside the packaging that counts! Good things often come in cheap packages – so whether we’re talking razors, moisturisers, make-up, hair products, soap or toothpaste, it’s always worth giving less expensive brands a go. If it’s facials, massages, manicures and pedicures you’re after, consider heading to your local beauty college or TAFE – you can often get treatments for less, as they usually need people to practice on. If it’s your ‘do’ that’s bringing your budget undone, have a chat to your hairdresser about some new options that will keep you looking good for less. Want even more? Keep the kids happy
We know keeping the kids entertained can be an expensive exercise, but believe us when we tell you it really doesn’t have to be! There are plenty of ways your family can head out and about and have fun for next to nothing – starting with the local library! These days libraries aren’t quiet and boring … they’re jam-packed full of books, DVDs, CDs, comics, activity groups and more, and the best part is that it’s free! If you want to wander further afield, jump online and Google ‘free kids activities’ or ‘free family activities’ to see what’s on in your area. When it comes to all the ‘stuff’ kids need, especially for school, your best bet is to go for durability and quality over fashion and brand – and it’s always worth bulk buying those stationery items you know are going to get lost!
Taking care of your feathered, furred and finned friends
It isn’t just the human members of your family who can make great savings – the family pet can help out too. Making your own pet food can save you a bundle and bones from the butcher can be cheaper than chew toys for dogs. Food for your feathered and finned friends can be less expensive if you head to a pet ‘warehouse’ rather than buying retail brands at the supermarket, and most of them will enjoy having fresh tidbits when they can. If you have kids, you can put ‘grooming’ on their list of household chores instead of paying a professional service to do it. Also, look into getting health insurance for your animals – they need health care too, and it can be almost as expensive as it is for humans.
Using simple tips just like these will help you keep the house and everyone in it looking good and having fun – and the only difference you’ll probably notice is the savings!
