The 30 Day Money Diet - week one

Your Family Your Money

These are just some highlights of the 30 Day Challenge - to get even more great tips, get your copy of the 30 Day Money Diet!

This week in the 30 Day Money Diet we kick off the savings by tackling some of the biggest expenses a family has - groceries, shopping, utilities and transport. You'll be amazed by just how simple it can be to streamline these things and make massive savings!

Put an end to kitchen nightmares

Every member of your family needs at least a few healthy meals a day, so you might think your grocery budget is one area where you’ll just have to swallow the cost. But the truth is that with a bit of organisation and some sneaky strategies you can get all the food you need for the week for a fraction of the price. Put together a seven-day meal plan every week that makes good use of leftovers, and do a quick inventory of your fridge and cupboards to make sure you’re not doubling up on stuff you already have before you go shopping. Collecting your ‘junk mail’ can be a good way to find great discount buys, and if you stick to using seasonal fresh produce you’ll get fruits and veggies that are not only cheaper, but taste better too! Having said that … frozen veg can be just as good as the fresh stuff, and given the fact that fresh-food prices are creeping higher these days, they can be a much more economical option.

Be a smart shopper
When you can resist everything except temptation, trips to the supermarket can be a financial nightmare! While supermarkets do encourage you to ‘impulse buy’, it’s possible to beat them at their own game and make great savings when you shop. Write a list of the items you need before you head out, and only take the money you need with you when you go – because you can’t spend what you don’t have! Keep an eye on the ‘loss leaders’ in catalogues and any weekly specials to get better prices, and don’t be tempted to buy items at the checkout – they’re expensive, and most of the time, you don’t need them. And if you have kids, try to leave them at home when you do the shopping – you’d be amazed at what an enterprising four year old can sneak into a trolley!

Streamline your travel costs

If you have more than one vehicle, have a think about how much they’re really costing you. Make a list of all the yearly expenses your vehicles rack up, from petrol to registration fees to maintenance, and then have a think about whether you really need them. Deciding to get rid of a second (or third) vehicle can save you thousands of dollars a year, and there can be loads of cheaper ways to get where you need to go. You can carpool with friends or colleagues, make use of our fantastic public transport system, or try walking or riding a bike for shorter journeys.

Slash your utility bills
Utility costs can creep up on you – it’s difficult to know what you’re spending until that dreaded bill arrives – but there are some simple things you can do to help keep them under control. Find out when your ‘off-peak’ times are so you can run power-heavy appliances when the prices are cheapest. Always turn off power points when you’re not using what’s plugged into them, and make the most efficient use of your power-hungry appliances: run washing machines with a full load and use them during off-peak times, fill the oven up when you’ve got it on and keep the fridge and freezer full when you can – it costs less to run a full fridge, freezer or oven than an empty one. If you find that you’re using your mobile phone far more than your landline, consider scrapping the landline altogether – after all, you don’t really need a phone you’re not going to use (if you need a landline for your broadband, check out the ‘naked’ ADSL options out there, you often don’t need a landline to have one).

Following these simple steps can save you a small fortune – but if you want to save even more, check out the Challenges for next week here!
