The 30 Day Money Diet - week four

Your Family Your Money

These are just some highlights of the 30 Day Challenge - to get even more great tips, get your copy of the 30 Day Money Diet!

This week in the 30 Day Money Diet we end the challenge on a high - taking care of the fun things in life! If you thought it wasn't possible to have a great money plan and still enjoy all of the things that make life fun - think again! With the 30 Day Challenge, anything's possible!

Reducing entertainment costs / going out for less

One of the main reasons why the 30 Day Challenge is so effective and easy to maintain is that it's all about being able to keep doing the things you want to do - you just need to do them a little differently. These tips are all about how to maximise your fun and minimise your costs at the same time ... and because the Challenge is also about Your Family as well as Your Money, it's about making opportunities for the family to spend quality time together, playing and bonding over some good, old-fashioned  games!

  • BYO your wine - it’s worth paying the corkage to avoid costly restaurant prices for wine.
  • Have dessert and coffee at home - these are big money spinners for restaurants.
  • Enjoy a ‘night out’ at home – take turns with friends and split the costs of hosting.
  • Use vouchers, shop-a-dockets, Entertainment Book discounts, loyalty program rewards and discount ticket websites (like Just the Ticket) to keep costs down when you do head out.
  • Head to the cinema on ‘discount’ days and, for kids movies, take advantage of ‘adults at kids prices’ when you can.
  • Channel your 'inner child' and dust off all your favourite old boardgames, or challenge the kids to see who's better at their favourite video game!

Making holidays more affordable
Holidays are all about making the hard work we put in all year worth it - they're the time we get to splurge a bit and have fun with the family. The 30 Day Challenge is full of great tips that will help you make the most of your holiday dollars so that you can enjoy every minute of your family fun without worrying about your budget, starting with these:

  • Getting there – get quotes for everything you can online, use ‘last minute’ websites, vouchers and loyalty reward programs.
  • Time it – travel outside ‘peak’ periods if you can. You can save up to 50 per cent on costs by holidaying off-peak, and you can avoid premium prices and queues at attractions as well.
  • Protect yourself – use luggage locks, make sure you have the right travel insurance.

Go minimalist
Set a date once a year to get in and de-clutter your life - we like to do this in January to get the year off to a fresh start, but anytime is a good time to get rid of the things you really don't need! And remember, one person's 'trash' is another person's treasure, so see if you can sell the items you don't want - it's a great way to fund this year's holiday!

  • Get rid of everything that you don’t like, doesn’t fit or you just don’t wear – including shoes – and do the same for everyone in the house.
  • ‘De-clutter’ your house – put a dollar value on things you don’t want.
  • Don’t be an impulsive buyer throughout the year - only replace items if they break or wear out, rather than just because you want a new one.
  • Make some money - Have a garage sale or get onto eBay to make some money from the things you no longer want, or give them away to a good cause if you prefer.
