The 30 Day Money Diet - how to save at the salon
Louise Blake
Getting your hair done should be a relaxing and pampering experience – not a stressful one! But how often have you spent your entire time at the hairdresser worrying about how much it’s going to cost by the time you’re finished? These tips are designed to show you how to get the beautiful locks you want, without emptying your bank account to do it!
As a colour technician I see many new clients who come in asking for an all-over colour, such as a tint with a half-head of foils. Now that most people are moving to softer techniques it’s normal to have a few foils through a tint, but a half-head of foils is a lot of colour, and when added to a tint it will almost double the bill! It’s highly unlikely that you’re really going to need all that colour, and you could be getting a similar look for half the price.
If you’re finding it too expensive to maintain your foils every six to eight weeks, remember that you don’t needs to get a full head of foils every time – you can alternate between a half-head and mini foils (where the colour is foiled through the part). If this is still proving to be too pricey, you might want to consider another technique altogether – like putting foils throughout the hair, but keeping them under the parting. You may also have heard of techniques like root stretching, balayage or ombre – these are all techniques that create an end result with darker roots and different tones blending through to the ends. They all create a more ‘grown out’, casual look that can last between 12 and 15 weeks – and that means you can have a great looking colour that only needs to be refreshed three or four times a year, instead of the six to eight times you’d need to have foils redone.
One of the most common problems for people with white (or grey) hair is the need to re-colour every four weeks to maintain the coverage. Another alternative to having a whole tint done every four weeks is to alternate between the full tint and an intrum tint, which covers the roots through the parting and the hairline, or a half-tint. We also recommend that people invest in hair mascara, which can be combed into the hair at the part to blend in the re-growth and can give your colour an extra few weeks of life.
Quick tips for a savvy salon visit:
• Find out how much what you want done will cost before your hairdresser starts work – then you can relax and enjoy!
• Let your hairdresser know if you’re on a strict budget and ask them to recommend different options and techniques that may create a similar result for a lower price.
• Find out if your salon has discount days – many salons offer discounted services on the quieter days of the week.
• Ask if your salon has a loyalty program, and make sure you take advantage of it if they do.
• Be willing to try new techniques like mini foils, intrum tints and root stretching.
• Remember that many of the services you may be offered could come at
an additional cost, for example shampooing and blow-drying.
